Two great road bowls games were played at the Burke & Wills Winery at Mia Mia over the Melbourne Cup weekend.A small demonstration match on Saturday 29 October 2011 ended in a draw, but provided the practice for a tough-fought game on the following day. The two practice teams, Us and Them, were captained by Mike and Marina respectively.Us were leading towards the half-way mark – a cattle grid - before a mis-throw by the captain allowed Them to catch up. The teams were then locked together until the drawn finish.The main Sunday match was won by the Locals team, headed by Eugene from nearby Heathcote, by the slimmest of margins – 1 throw – over the Visitors team.The Burke & Wills Winery’s rocky road proved a challenge for the newcomers playing on both teams, but the wide grass either side of the road ensured there were no “lost bowls”.

Participants unanimously called for future Burke & Wills festivals to include a road bowls challenge.
